How to Mine Scrypt-Based Altcoins

One of the biggest technology stories this year has been the rise in popularity of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.  Bitcoin has seen its value rise this year from very little to over $1200 a coin.  Litecoin, the second most popular coin, rose to over $50 for a time.  Other coins have popped up like weeds: some have gained in value, others are still worthless.

So how do you get these coins?  You can buy these coins on web sites like BTC-e (which specializes in the main coins) or Cryptsy (which specializes in more obscure altcoins), or you can mine them yourself.  For many, it might be easier just to buy coins, but if you would like to mine them, I hope to make it a little easier here.  I had trouble figuring out how to do it myself, so hopefully this will make it easier for others.

These directions have been verified for mining scrypt-based coins.  While mining other coins might use these or similar directions, I have only tested this out with scrypt coins.  This instruction assumes that you know what a cryptocoin is, you know what a wallet is, and you know how to install software.

Minecraft Graphing

Minecraft graphing

If you are a homeschooling parent, then you'll probably want to look for ways to get your kids interested in the lessons.  My son loves to play Minecraft.  When we were quite busy with things last year, much of his reading lessons were through using Minecraft... and you know what?  It worked.  I was a little bit worried at the start of school whether or not he would be able to read stories in the second grade book (he's six, so it wouldn't be the end of the world if it was too hard), but evidently, Minecraft helped him learn how to read up to the second grade level.

Please Note:

Due to my husband's law school graduation and the increased amount of things that I will need to be doing over the next week, I will be unable to produce tonight's Survivor recap, finale recap, or reunion show recap in a timely manner this season.  I apologize for this in advance.  I do plan on producing the recaps on May 18th or shortly afterwards.

I hate the fact that this comes right around the finale, but I didn't schedule the graduation, nor the extra stuff that is coming along with it.  Should the world situation demand it, I may be able to check in on Twitter (@Brookelorren) or Facebook, but I won't be producing any labor-intensive content between now and then.

See ya in a week and a half!

Top Songs from the 1940s

I've been interested in music since I was a kid. In high school, I developed a way of combining different music charts in order to make a much larger chart containing the top songs from the year. I decided to start a much larger project, combining charts from multiple years and even multiple decades. I start, however, with the humble 1940s.

Why start there? Well, it's the easiest decade to start at, for one. Most of the music charts that you find are available for the rock era, from the 1950s (especially mid-1950s) on. I was able to find very few charts for the 1940s, so this part of the chart list is very small. It's an easy project to finish. For this reason, the only charts that these songs will appear on will be the 1940s charts and the final song chart at the end. Starting in the 1950s, there will be song charts available for each year as well.

Why even bother with the songs of the 1940s? Do people even care about them? Surprisingly, a lot of the songs that we think of as "American Classics" today initially came out in the 1940s. The 1940s might not be full of songs that you put on your playlist in the car, but they did come out with quite a few songs that you might hum along to from time to time. So... I start there.

Survivor Caramoan Episode 12 PDF Print E-mail

The Beginning of the End

In Survivor Caramoan: Fans vs. Favorites, a core group of favorites banded together in order to take each other to the end.  They invited Sherri, a fan who had been alienated by Reynold and Eddie, into their group.  One by one, all of the competition, except fans Eddie and Reynold, had been voted out.  Amazingly, this happened while splitting the votes several times (to try to get rid of an immunity idol), something that often ends up backfiring; somehow this group was so loyal to each other that they could survive a few split votes.  With only two non-alliance members left and an episode where two people will be voted out, it truly is the beginning of the end for this core alliance.
