Working Today?

With all the problems that this country has been having lately, you would think that US Congress would be working hard to figure out our problems, right? Well, I’ve been reading the book Fleeced, and it seems that Congress spends a lot of time… wasting time.
These people get paid $165,000 a year or so. You would expect them to work hard for you. I want them to work on real problems, like immigration and the economy, rather than spending a lot of time working on proclaiming the first full week of April as “National Workplace Wellness Week” or congratulating the Adrian College Bulldogs Men’s Hockey team… these are both measures that the House of Representatives worked on this Friday… yep, our country is in the middle of financial armageddon, and the House wants to make sure that in April you think about workplace wellness… if you still have a job, that is.
To be fair, both the house and the senate were working today, on a Saturday. And the Senate did spend some time working on shoveling more debt onto your shoulders yesterday in the bailout talks.
Perhaps we should hold our representatives to a higher standard… I think that for the most part, we elect them and then forget about them. Then we listen to our favorite TV or radio personalities to tell us what they did. Perhaps we should take a look for ourself. You can look up the results of the previous days work for your legislature at thomas.loc.gov.
It’s nice that it’s available for all to see if they would like. I hadn’t seen it before today. It is good that it’s available, perhaps more of us should actually look at it. Then perhaps we can send comments to our Senator for taking the time to recognize AARP’s 50th anniversary (also something that was accomplished on Friday).
