title pic Prop 8 Passed In California, Violence Urged

Posted by Lorren on November 6, 2008

Here in Arizona, we had Proposition 102 on our ballots, which would define marriage between one man and one woman. I thought that it would probably pass, because everywhere you go you could see “Yes! 102″ signs up. I even saw a few in Spanish, that took me a minute or so to translate.

In California, they had their own proposition, Proposition 8. Earlier this year, some activist judges said that it was okay for homosexuals to get married… so the licenses started getting issued, kids went on field trips to see gay weddings, etc. Proposition 8 would make all of those marriages invalid, because it said about the same thing as 102 in Arizona.

The main people supporting Proposition 8 were church people. Catholics, Mormons, Baptists… probably a lot of people that voted for Proposition 8 were Christians or Christian leaning people.

Some of the homosexual activists were not very happy. This article collected some of the quotes heard around the blogosphere regarding passage of the law:

  • “Can someone in CA please go burn down the Mormon temples there, PLEASE. I mean seriously. DO IT.”
  • “I’m going to give them something to be f–ing scared of….I’m a radical who is now on a mission to make them all pay for what they’ve done.”
  • “Burn their f–ing churches to the ground, and then tax the charred timbers.”
  • “I hope the No on 8 people have a long list and long knives.”
  • “I swear, I’d murder people with my bare hands this morning.”
  • “Trust me. I’ve got a big list of names of mormons and catholics [sic] that were big supporters of Prop 8….As far as mormons and catholics…I warn them to watch their backs.”

What a bunch of sweethearts.

Now, I’m not an advocate of violence or anything, I think that hurting another human being because they are gay is wrong. We’re all sinners, some of us just have different pet sins than others. We don’t go around suggesting to stone adulterers or people that watch pornography, those are sins too. But why is it okay to advocate violence against people that don’t agree with you if they just so happen to be Christians or have Christian values?

I remember watching a video when I was really young… I think that it was Ray Boltz singing “I Pledge Allegiance To The Lamb” (who would have guessed that he hadn’t repented and put his full trust and faith in Jesus), where some guy was going to be killed for his Christian beliefs. This had to have been in the 80s or so, I think my babysitter was watching it or something at the time. But I remember watching it, thinking that something like that would never happen here.

I wouldn’t be so sure now.

The way things are, I think that Christians need to brush up on their Bibles and put on the full armor of God. Read the Bible, learn what it says, memorize verses if you can (I discovered a really cool way to memorize verses yesterday while teaching school, maybe I’ll blog on it some time). Read about other Christians who struggled in the past. Read Foxe’s Book of Martyrs. Read about Adoniram Judson. Read Brother Yun’s book The Heavenly Man. Realize that if things do get bad, and someone decides to burn down your church or even take your life because you’re a Christian, you’re not alone. We need strength today to make it though, because the time is growing short.
