I’ve Been Quoted!
Posted by Lorren on December 21, 2008
Like many people, finances have been tight for us recently. I’ve been praying about our income, and I’m going to see if I can do something about it. So I decided to start writing articles for Associated Content. It may mean that I won’t be writing as much here, because anything that I feel is appropriate for AC will go there… I don’t get paid for writing here, and we need the money.
So I started writing articles for AC, and I ended up writing an article on how technology can help children learn to read. I was searching around for a link to Jumpstart World, and saw this quote up on their web site:
“JumpStart World was well worth the money for us… it’s been her favorite game over the last 10 months… 10 months is an eternity for my 5 year old to stay interested in a computer game.”
Epinions.com, February 2008
That quote seemed really familiar… wait… that’s MY review! I thought that was pretty exciting. I’ve had other bloggers quote me before; I’ve quoted other bloggers. But never before has a huge corporation, selling software in stores like Best Buy or Wal-Mart, quoted me before. My daughter has used Jump Start Software since she was 2 years old, so it was really a cool surprise to see that they have used my review on their site. And if anybody clicks on the link and opens the full review, I get page counts from that.
Then I realized something… I am a professional writer. I’ve been paid pocket change for my writings before, but I always thought of it as something I did for a little spare change. Not something that I could do to help out our family’s budget. Isn’t my husband the writer in our family? He’s the published novelist, after all. But perhaps I can do this too.
I’ve been writing for Epinions for so long now, that I’ve built up a large portfolio of reviews. I discovered that I made over $100 for doing nothing except collecting royalties.
In the great depression, people still made money. They just had to look harder for work. And that is what I’m going to do. I can work and teach. We can survive. And the answer was in front of my face all along.
