title pic My Ocean Adventure

Posted by Lorren on July 7, 2009

Me and my kids are off on vacation right now. We went to Ocean Shores for the fourth of July. It turned out to be more of an adventure that we bargained for.

Every year on the fourth of July, the people at Ocean Shores have a large fireworks display. There are also tons of fireworks up and down the beach. I was at the beach with my brother and some people that I ran into that I hadn’t seen since high school. At around 11, the mist was coming in and it was too hard to see the fireworks, so we decide to head back to the campground.

At Ocean Shores, everyone drives along the beach. There’s practically a highway down there. Unfortunately, the tide was coming in right around the time that we were leaving. The sand was getting soft, and our car got stuck in the sand.

I’ve seen cars half-buried in the sand before at the beach. I was nervous, and didn’t know what to do. My brother helped me push the car out of the sand. We got stuck again. Some guy in a truck offered to tow us for $20. Well, all my money is in the bank, and I usually use debit cards, so I told them that I couldn’t pay, and they moved on.

My car got really stuck in the sand at one point, and we had to find a place underneath the Cobalt that I drive where they could attach a tow cable. A truck with a nice owner was able to help us get out that time. We decided to drive away from the tide for a while and wait it out.

While we were waiting, cars up and down the beach were getting stranded. We could see cars stuck in the sand. The surf was splashing over some of the cars. Trucks were getting stuck. It was crazy. I think I saw the guy that offered to tow my car for money get stuck. Although there might be a car or two on a normal night getting stuck, I had never seen anything like it. There were cars all over the place getting stuck.

Eventually, the tide started going out again, and we decided to chance driving off the beach. Both me and my brother got stuck one more time, but then we got out and got off that beach.

I don’t mind adventures if I can make it through unscathed (the adventure of my house catching on fire last year = not fun). The only time I was really scared was when I got stuck and the tide was still coming in. Waiting it out on the beach, and even getting stuck after the tide started going out, wasn’t so bad. But it’s also nice when adventures are over, and you survive unharmed.
