Contentment

The other day I was listening to the radio, and they were talking about contentment. It is easy to complain that we don’t have enough, especially when we see so many people around us that appear to be doing better than us. We may have been affected by the recession, and wonder why we were the one to be laid off, when there are so many others that still have jobs.

The Bible tells us to be happy with what we have. All we really need to survive are shelter and food. We don’t need a big, fancy house, just something to keep the snow out. We don’t need to eat at fancy restaurants. Bread will supply calories, although it’s not as tasty. We don’t have to have all of the toys and entertainment products that so many of us have either.

Maybe we should focus on being happy with what we have. Even when we could have more. Obesity is a problem in America, but if we could just push ourselves away from the dinner table when we have had enough (as opposed to how much we want), those of us that need to lose weight might actually do so. We don’t have to have a lot of the things that we think we do, and we could save ourselves some money. Perhaps we could finally get out of debt, and maybe have some money to give away too.

Even health care is a luxury that some people don’t have in many parts of the world. I’m not happy with what the government is trying to put together, and I think that we should speak up for what is right, and vote out representatives that don’t represent us, but if the worst should happen and it passes, perhaps we should be content that God is in control, even of our health and our health care.
