Hank the Cowdog Tornado Game… Aggravation with a Twist
Posted by Lorren on August 25, 2009
Along with the outstanding Hank the Cowdog book that I had the opportunity to try out, I was sent the Tornado (Hank the Cowdog) game. This game is fun for any child, whether they are familiar with Hank the Cowdog or not.
The Tornado game comes in a sturdy plastic case. Inside the case, you find enough playing pieces for up to four players. Each player has Hank the Cowdog, Drover, and Junior Buzzard characters. The goal of the game is to move all three characters around the board first. Just like in the game of aggravation, if you land on somebody’s character, you get sent back to the beginning.
There are two twists to this game. The first twist is the spinner. Rather than using dice, which can be lost, and are sometimes difficult for younger children to handle without flailing across the room, Tornado uses a tornado spinner. The spinner is self-contained and easy to use. The other twist is the tornado spaces on the board. When you land on a tornado space, you have to spin again. Even spaces will allow you to go even farther in the game… but watch out, if you roll an odd space, you’ll have to go backwards!
My daughter and I played this game together and had a good time, although she did get upset because I won. The game plays fairly rapidly, and unless you end up with some really bad rolls, you’ll probably finish the game before your child gets bored. The game is easy enough to learn, and after I played it a couple of times with my daughter, she was able to show her friends how to play the game with her when they game to visit.
The game also comes with a cassette tape with an excerpt from the book that the Tornado game was based on, #25, The Case of the Swirling Killer Tornado. We don’t have a cassette player handy, so we’ll have to get the book out of the library to find out what happens.
If you have a Hank fan in your family, or if your children like to play games but you’re afraid a full game of Aggravation might be too long, you might want to check out Tornado. I’m sure that my daughter and I, and my daughter and my son when he gets older, will continue to have a lot of fun playing this game.
