Yesterday, as we were coming home from taking my husband from the LSAT, the song “Somebody’s Praying Me Through” by Allen Asbury came on. Although I had heard this song several times before, I was struck by the following lines:

It may be my Mother, it might be my Dad
Or an old friend I’ve forgot I had
But whoever it is I’m so glad that
Somebody’s praying me through

I have met many people in my lifetime. Some people have left a lasting impression on me. Especially some that I met when I was in the Navy. When you’re sailing out in the middle of the ocean in the dead of night, there’s not much to do other than to look for ships on the horizon and talk. We had a lot of conversations about the Lord on those watches. You find out who loves God, and who would like to spit in his face.

Even though I haven’t seen these people in almost a decade, I still pray for some of these people on occasion. I pray for some of my daughter’s old friends too. My daughter’s first best friend eventually had to move to a different day care, and we lost touch with her. She was such a sweet little girl. I pray for her to stay that way, even when she grows up.

Sometimes I wonder about praying for someone I haven’t seen in 10 years. More than likely, they have forgotten about me over time. I have no clue as to what they’re up to, and it’s probable that I will never know, in this lifetime, whether my prayers have been answered.

I know that I’m not alone. There are plenty of people out there that continue to pray for others, whether the recipient of the prayers ever knows or not. Listening to this song today just makes me realize that it’s important to continue to pray for those old friends that have forgotten about you.

Maybe you have been the recipient of prayers from “an old friend [you] forgot [you] had.” Maybe an old friend depends on you. Why not take a couple minutes today to pray for an old friend or two?
