I remember September 11th, do you? I was living in Italy at the time, working as the Force Protection (anti-terrorism) Officer in Naples. The day was fairly boring. My boss was away in the US getting married. It was around 3:30, and I was thinking about going home early, on the 4:30 bus. Then someone from security ran through the halls saying that the World Trade Center had been hit. We all ran down downstairs to watch CNN, wondering whether this was terrorism, or an accident. Then the second plane hit, and we knew. Our world would never be the same.

I didn’t get home that night until midnight. My neighbor picked me up to take me to work at 4 the next morning.

Our country should never forget what happened. Unfortunately, the memory seems to be fading from our collective consciousness. My daughter doesn’t know what happened. She’s seven. She wasn’t alive.

Unless we remember what happened, we are destined to repeat history. We need to teach this to our kids. Never forget.

So where were you on September 11, 2001?
