title pic Man Convicted of a Felony for Sleeping in His Car

Posted by Lorren on April 2, 2010

While writing car reviews today, I ran into an article about a man who was convicted of a felony (and sent to jail for four years) for sleeping in his car. The car wasn’t operable, and the keys weren’t in the ignition, but the police gave him a DUI anyway, just because he was supposedly in “physical control” of this car that wouldn’t work, they convicted him of a felony anyway.

I’m not sure what to say about this one, other than it doesn’t make sense. He wasn’t driving, so what part of “driving” under the influence applies to him? The car was incapable of being driven.

It’s cases like these that illustrate the problems of government today. A nanny state where the thought police are ready to examine your motives. Where a kid can be suspended for bringing a squirt gun to school, or building a gun out of Legos.

Just because you haven’t been affected by this stupidity, doesn’t mean that one day you won’t. If you let one man go to jail for sleeping in his car without speaking out, what’s next? It could be you.

Several years ago, I was pregnant, and the baby died. We did all sorts of testing to make sure that it was no longer alive, including ultrasounds and chemical tests. They told me that I could have the baby removed surgically, but I could not take medicine to end my “pregnancy” because that would be considered abortion, and the federal government won’t pay for it (I was in the military at the time). Since when does “abortion” involve a baby that is not alive? Another example of government not making a great deal of sense.

This is the same government that we want in charge of our health care. The new law is set up, so that if a bureaucrat says that you can have one procedure and not another, it cannot be appealed. Does this mean that at some point, if a mom is expecting a baby with down syndrome, the bureaucrat can recommend abortion and there is no appeal? These are situations that people in China face. I will do everything in my power to stay away from the doctors when these changes are in place.

This is our future. I guess we need to get used to it.
