title pic Self-Sufficiency

Posted by Lorren on July 23, 2010

Yesterday, I posted about how the Weathermen’s plan, written around 1969 or so, was beginning to be fulfilled in the events of today… more specifically, in how agents in the government were trying to get people hooked on the government’s services, so that they can rip the services out from under them, and there would be rioting in the streets. I got a comment over on YouSayToo regarding my post… saying shame on me for supporting Glenn Beck when I don’t have a lot of money when corporations had trillions but weren’t hiring, credit cards were charging outrageous fees, and there were scammers giving out fraudulent mortgages.

I had a lot to say about that. Some of my points were 1) don’t wait around for someone else to give you a job 2) having a credit card is stupid anyway, 3) part of the mortgage problem was that ACORN and the government was pressuring others to give out mortgages to people that shouldn’t have them. I guess that this is why I’m identified with the “oppressors” when I have absolutely no power at all, except through the words that I write (and nobody has to listen to me). What I didn’t say was that… who cares if the corporations have trillions of dollars and aren’t hiring, it’s not their job to hire people, it’s their job to make money for their shareholders.

I also mentioned that, as long as I didn’t have the government on my back, I could go off and live in a cave and I’d be alright. How much of the stuff that we have do we really need anyway? We need food and safety, and that’s about it. Everything else is government mandated. For example… I could go live out in a tent in the forest, but if I do, the government might try to take my kids away. They might find it unacceptable if I live in a home without electricity.

As the government goes bankrupt, these things that currently matter so much will start to go away. For example: education. Right now, parents are mandated to educate their child in some way, whether through homeschooling, public school, or private school. When the government no longer can afford to keep the public schools open, the mandate for education will go away. Right now, the city of Oakland won’t respond to many different types of complaints. If someone plays their music too loud, embezzles from your company, or comes into your house and robs you blind, you’re basically on your own (although so far, you can take your case to court if you know who to sue). Things will necessarily become different.

This is why you need to learn self-sufficiency. We depend on others to do so many things for us. Like getting food or clothing. If you know someone who can hunt, have them teach you. They may be your best friend in the future. Someone in your inner circle should be able to know how to sew: do you really think that we’re going to be able to depend on China and other third world nations for our clothing and goods when the economy is collapsing?

I like this book, Back to Basics. My mom had an older copy of it when I was younger, and I used to look through it. Back then, I would read about Little House on the Prairie and wonder what it was like back in those days.

Unlike the guy that commented on my post yesterday, I refuse to be a victim. If I have to pitch a tent somewhere and plant potatoes, so be it. If the government crumbles around me, I want to have a backup plan. The last thing I want to do is stand outside with a helpless look on my face after some disaster and wait for the government to ride in with some Communist program to help me.

You don’t have to be a victim. What you need to do is decide that no matter what, you’ll do what it takes to survive and keep your values intact. You might lose nearly everything, but that’s okay. People survive in much more difficult conditions than we are in. I would suggest on educating yourself on how you can do more for yourself, now, before things start getting really difficult around here.
