One of the big news events of the day is the Royal Wedding. Just for fun, I decided to calculate my genealogical connection to Prince William. Like millions of other people on this planet, I am a descendant of William the Conqueror and some other Kings and Queens back in Europe. If you’re related to one monarch, you’re pretty much related to them all. So I decided to get out the genealogical software and do a little work.

Prince William is my 19th cousin 3 times removed. We’re practically siblings ;-) . Robert III, King of Scotland is my Greatx22 Grandfather. He’s Prince William’s 19th Great Grandfather.

So short of a nuclear disaster wiping out 99% of life on Earth, I’m not likely to become queen any time soon. However, it is pretty interesting to read about the lives of these royals sometimes. Like Sophia Dorothea, who didn’t want to marry the King of England, who said he was a “pig snout”. They were forced to get married anyway. Both spouses were adulterous, and Sophia ended up being imprisoned at the end of her life (although in a relatively comfortable location).

Evidently, Princess Diana was a direct descendant of some of the Royal Kings too. I don’t know how, and it’s really late. Maybe I’ll do some research on that next time I research royal genealogy.
