I was going to write about “Freedom” for F in the A to Z Blog Challenge, but this was pretty big news that popped up: the Glenn Beck show is going to end. Not the radio program, but his daily television show.

I suppose that will free up an hour of my day; I’ve been watching the show on DVR daily since it began. Although I suppose that I’ll spend at least part of that time researching the news on my own, or going to an alternative web site like Freedom Connect to get my news.

He isn’t leaving Fox News; just transitioning away from a daily program. No word on whether it is because of his health, because he’s going to be working on another project, or something else. His show will be missed by many.

Cabaret is a movie that provides insights into Weimar Germany.

I’ve been talking about the Weimar Republic since January of 1998; I believe that America may be headed in that direction. I knew that it was a time of extreme inflation. I learned in German class about how people would take wheelbarrow loads of cash to the grocery store to buy a loaf of bread. How people would get paid in the middle of the day, would go buy their groceries, and then would go back to work, getting paid at the end of the day. I wonder how that would work for content production; for some of the things I do, I don’t get paid until two months after some of the work I do. Under extreme hyperinflation, that money would be worthless when I received it. I suppose if the US ever did get into that situation, companies might expedite the payment process… or nobody would work for them.

I watched Cabaret last night in order to try to understand more about the Weimar Republic. The cabaret in the movie was an entertainment establishment of moral decadence. While many people turned to the cabaret in the movie as a response to the despair in the world around them, it’s likely that most of the people were not actually as deep into immorality as the people in the movie. This is apparent when the main characters take a drive out into the countryside, where the “good” people of Germany sing patriotic songs (unfortunately with Nazi leaders).

We see the Nazis duke it out with the Communists. One of the main characters remarks on how they would use the Nazis to get rid of the Communists, and then they would control them. We know from hindsight that it didn’t work that way. In fact, most people that were performers in the Cabaret not only did not control the Nazis, but were sent to concentration camps.

The movie is an interesting look at what the Germans were reacting against. I still want to learn more about that time period, especially if we are repeating the mistakes of the past.

The Pentagon wants to grant permission for military officials before they talk to the media. Will enlistees need permission before publishing information about boot camp graduation in their hometown newspaper?

-->

As a result of General McChrystal’s interview with Rolling Stone, Defense Secretary Robert Gates is issuing an order stating that military officials will have to get permission from the Pentagon before doing an interview with the news media.

The order has not been released, but depending on the scope of this order, the memo could be a sweeping blanket of silence for the US Military. How far does the military plan to take this?

Will this order be in effect for E-1s straight out of boot camp, or will it only apply to higher officials? Will it apply to blogs? Will military officials be able to post on message boards? Will they be able to comment on blogs? What about writing product reviews, or authoring articles about how to cook pot roast on a site like Associated Content? The media is now a mixture of things, and is much more participatory than it used to be. Even Twitter and Facebook, which weren’t around when I was in the Navy, could in some ways be considered a part of the media.

We have to wait for the memo to come out, but I hope that this order isn’t extremely far reaching. Do we really want the Pentagon to get involved when Ensign Schmuckatelli is on leave and wins a pie eating contest, and the media wants to put his picture in his hometown newspaper? Really? There’s a line between bad-mouthing government officials in a nationalwide publication, and giving your comments on the new Star Wars movie in a local newspaper. That last one I actually did… I was in Aruba at the time. Would it be necessary for me to call the Pentagon up to ask if it was okay for me to tell them I was excited about seeing it? That would be ridiculous.

I need to say something about the “Peace Flotilla” and Israel. If you watch the above video, you can clearly see that the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) was being attacked with pipes by members of the “Peace Flotilla.” Israel was not the aggressor, although the news media would like to say so.

It feels like we are entering the 1940s all over again. The world is against the Jewish people. They are seen as the enemy all over Europe, and among many in the mainstream media. Well, I know the history of the 1940s, and I can’t remain silent. I don’t care what the cost is.

In Genesis 12, Abram is told to leave his country, and God gave him a promise: “I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee.” That promise was passed down through Abram, later Abraham, to the Jewish people and the nation of Israel.

The world is on track to repeat history. People didn’t wake up one day and throw the Jews into ovens… that took time. It started out with anti-Jewish propaganda just like what we are seeing today. It ended badly.

I can’t stand by without expressing my disagreement about what’s going on. It doesn’t matter what everyone else does, I will not turn my back on Israel, no matter what it costs. Even if that means that I will one day be gassed as well. I know where I’m going at the end of my earthly life. Nobody can take away my heavenly home. I will stand with God’s people.

I joined the Navy in 1993. Going in, I thought about how the military fought against Hitler and the Holocaust. I knew about Genesis 12:3 back then; at the time, I never thought that there would ever come a point where the US would turn its back on Israel. Over the 10 years I spent in the Navy, that perception changed. I had to tell myself that no matter what happened, I would never let myself harm Israel.

The “Peace Flotilla” isn’t peaceful; they have known terrorist ties.

While I was attending my grandpa’s memorial service last year, I ran into my old German teacher (a good guy). He recommended that I read The World Is Flat. I was pretty busy at the time, so I didn’t get the chance to read it then, but I did put a note with the name of the book in my iPod. I just started reading it yesterday.

Reading the book reminded me of the way that things have changed so much in the past 30 years or so (that’s about as far as my memory can take me). So many things have changed to make information more accessible. One of the biggest changes has been with telephone service.

Today, I wrote “How the Telephone Has Changed: 1980-2010″. If you’re young enough to still be eligible to audition for American Idol, then it may be an insight into another time (like when the dinosaurs roamed the earth). Otherwise, it could be a trip down memory lane. I hope that you like it. I may do some on other topics in the future.

If you are a writer like me, you might have heard that writing about “niche topics” is a good idea. At first, the idea sounds illogical. Why would you want to write about a topic that very few people are interested in? That doesn’t necessarily have to be the case. I write in three niche areas, and while I have received benefits of writing in all of them, I don’t consider these topics to be ones that nobody is interested in.

I have learned that as a writer, I benefit from writing about the same topic over and over. I sort of fell into my first niche, Survivor, without even trying. It has been my most profitable topic as a freelance writer so far. I write episode recaps on every episode, and I usually try to come up with a preview of the season to come before the season comes out (and if I can find a leak and write about the season before CBS makes its official announcement, even better). By consistently writing in that niche, I can link all my articles together, which allows people to surf among what I’ve written. People also know that I’ll always have a recap available (generally by the next morning) of the episode that aired the night before.

The second niche topic I write about is car reviews. I didn’t really choose that topic, I work for the company that owns Automobile.com, and they give me plenty of work. Since I get paid by the review, I get the most short-term gain, but it doesn’t give me a stream of continuous income like writing for myself does. It’s amazing what you can learn about a subject by researching the topic and writing about it for hours every week. While in the past, I never really paid too much attention about cars (except Mustangs, my dream automobile), I can now look at many cars and tell you something about them; how powerful that truck is, whether the car you bought is the base model or an upgrade, etc. While watching a 60 Minutes interview with Shawn White earlier today on Tivo, I noticed that Shawn had a Lamborghini Murcielago… they mentioned on the show that it was a Lamborghini, but I could just tell by looking at the car that it was a Murcielago: I could tell you the approximate price Shawn paid for the car, and how fast it goes, as well.

The third niche topic that I write about is the Olympics. I wrote my first Olympics web page, on the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, nearly a year ago. Tickets hadn’t gone on sale yet at that point. I’ve always been a fan of the Olympics, even though I don’t really care for traditional sports like football or baseball. After I wrote about Vancouver, I started writing about the other future Olympics. I then figured out that there were limitless things to say about the Olympics, considering that they’ve been around for 100 years now, and thousands of athletes compete in each Olympics. I launched my World Competes blog and web site last month; I figured that there never would be a lack of things to write about. Although I have watched the Olympics for about as long as I can remember, by writing about the Olympics every day, I learn a lot. This is a benefit about choosing a niche and writing about it.

Although I still write about topics that interest me outside of these niche topics, I know more than the average person about my niches. This helps me write about these topics better.

The MTV video awards were full of blasphemy and shock. The channel isn't fit for Christians.

Kathryn Darden wrote an excellent article on MTV’s Video Music Awards. I don’t think that I’ve watched MTV since college, so she did a great job of summing it up.

Evidently, Kanye West was rude and disrespectful when Taylor Swift received her award, Jack Black prayed to Satan, and much of the whole spectacle was meant to shock.

MTV has never been the home of the Puritans. However, it seems as if the television channel now does everything that it can do to spit in the face of Christianity and hate everything that is left in the world that is good.

It’s so important to know what your child is watching these days. And what they’re listening to. The mainstream media just isn’t safe any more.

Right now my kids are watching Caillou. LOL. Even my seven-year-old. My toddler just discovered the show, and it’s now his favorite.

My mom and I went outside this evening to see Mars (I went to visit them for the weekend on account of my grandfather’s memorial service). If you want to go see it, it does look great. Mom told me that it will be brighter now than it will ever be at any point in our lifetimes, and the next time Mars will be this close to us will be in 2000 more years.

Wanting to share this information with you, I did a search on the internet to find out more information to pass along. I discovered that this information is completely inaccurate. Snopes has more information about how bright Mars will be, or at least how it’s not as close as it will ever be in 2000 years.

For one thing, this event happened in 2003. So if you want to see Mars bigger than it ever will be in your lifetime, that ship has sailed. However, if you wait until 2018, you will get a view that was almost as spectacular as it was in 2003. Additionally, the 2000 years until the next close encounter was also wrong. In 2287, Mars will actually come closer to the Earth than it was in 2003. Most of us probably won’t be around then, but it’s no 2000 years…

I did see Mars tonight, and it was quite impressive. The planet was bright out. Evidently, it gets fairly close to the earth every 2 years though. So if you want to check out Mars, it looks great. But don’t fool yourself into thinking that you are seeing the astronomical phenomenon of the millennium.

Some of you might be familiar with Jerome Corsi, author of “Obama Nation”, a book that detailed some of the more unsavory details about Barak Obama’s past. He was recently detained by Kenyan officials, after he was doing some investigation into Obama’s Kenyan political ties. You may recall that Obama’s father was from Kenya, and he also has a Kenyan half-brother that lives off of less than $300 a year.

You can read the details in the World Net Daily article, but it sounds a little scary to me. He was detained by military members carrying armed rifles.

Now, if you or I traveled to Kenya, it’s likely that we would have been allowed to return to our home countries unimpeded. Getting kidnapped by armed military officers is not an ordinary occurance. I’ve traveled in many countries before, some that station military officers in random places, but I have never been questioned by the military. I’m just taking a wild stab at it here, but perhaps Corsi may have discovered something that they don’t want you to know?

The big question is, will we find out what it is before election day?
