Cash for Clunkers has, not surprisingly, led to record high prices for used cars.

When finding a job is like finding a needle in a haystack, keep looking.

“Blessed are the poor, for they shall get free stuff,” the Messiah once said on the sermon on the mount.
Whoops, I guess I’m getting my political and religious figures mixed up. Barack Obama wasn’t the guy that gave the sermon on the mount, right? Or was he? After all, Jesus did rise [...]

Posted by Lorren on

I’ve been about the economy a lot, so I’ve been trying to pay attention to how it is affecting other people. We’re technically not in a recession yet… or it can’t be declared a recession until after December at least, since the economic data for 2nd Quarter ‘08 indicated a slight expansion. Despite [...]

title pic Obama: “Let’s Bankrupt The Coal Industry!”

Posted by Lorren on November 2, 2008

Earlier this year, Barack Obama was interviewed by the San Francisco Chronicle, saying that the cap and trade restrictions that he wanted to pass would probably bankrupt the coal industry. Here is a link to my source.
With our economy being the way it is, we don’t purposely need to bankrupt an industry on purpose.
While [...]

Posted by Lorren on November 1, 2008

I’m currently reading Currency Wars: How Forged Money is the New Weapon of Mass Destruction. Coincidentally, I was just reading yesterday about France before the French Revolution in my daughter’s history textbook, and today I was reading about France in this book. A quote caught my eye:

In 1789, when Paris mobs launched the [...]

Posted by Lorren on October 29, 2008

I found this on MSN’s message boards… this is an excerpt from Only Yesterday by Frederick Lewis Allen. They were discussing the article on the Great Depression written by Jim Jubak.
“Speculation was easy-and quick. No long delays while titles were being investigated and deeds recorded; such tiresome formalities were postponed. The prevalent method of [...]

Posted by Lorren on October 23, 2008

I just finished reading Amity Schlaes’ book, The Forgotten Man. Although it’s more than a year old, it’s a very hot item at our local library right now. I had to request that the library hold a copy for me, and I couldn’t renew it, because there were other people requesting to read [...]

title pic Obama and Roosevelt: Just Ask Joe the Plumber

Posted by Lorren on October 21, 2008

I’ve posted previously that our times share a lot of similarities between those of 1929.  But there is another potential way that we might be history repeating itself as well… Obama seems to go after those who question him, just as Franklin Roosevelt did.
“Joe the Plumber,” the guy who had been saving up his money [...]

title pic Laying Off Teachers?

Posted by Lorren on October 18, 2008

Recently, a school district in Dallas laid off 375 teachers in Dallas, Texas. They were actually expecting to lay off even more. The layoffs were due to budget shortfalls.
I always thought that teaching was a fairly stable career. I suppose in tough times, it’s not as stable as you’d think.
